art4dst33t a 2010 project in Port-of-Spain the beginning

As a teacher at John S Donaldson Technical Institute I always tried to find ways to do projects with my students. In 2010 I devised the stencil project art4Dst33t.

This was my first proposal to the Ministry of Culture for funding to do this project. I asked for art materials and was able to buy spray paints and cardboard sheets. Art4Dst33t was done during the Carnival Season.

I had the assistance of a few JSDTI students who set out with me after meeting at my home in St.Ann’s. It was early on Jouvert morning, two-thirty to three in the morning. I had made sure to have a stamped letter from the Port-of-Spain Borough Council asking permission to use the street and spaces blocked up for the season.

At that early hour we began on South Quay in Port-of-Spain. As we looked around, deciding where we would start, we tested our first stencil on the ground and then on the protective mdf barriers that businesses put up during Carnival to prevent vandalism.
